11th March 2017 Kenya Investor market Report

As the week progressed, the stock market grew marginally in traded shares. There were 14.67m shares traded at a total value of Ksh 348.18m up by 35% from Monday’s trading. Safaricom was the highest traded share. However, Sasini also traded much with a significant growth in price.

The Banking Sector

Equity Bank continued with its downward trend losing a further 5.88% to close at 32.00. This was after it had lost 2.36% to close at 34.00 yesterday. KCB also traded at a lower price of 33.00. The banking sector overall lost 0.82% as banks post lower profits mainly due to the interest cap. However, Co-op bank traded higher by 0.36% to close at 14.05. Co-operative Bank was one of the few banks that posted a growth in profits for their 2016 profits.

Market Gainers

The shares that had the highest price increase were BAT +9.87 to close at 824. This was a recovery from the -9.64% decline yesterday to 750.00. Williamson Tea increased its share price by 9.26% to 117.00 and its competitor Sasini increased its share price by 8.82% to close at 27.75% – Yesterday, Sasini had a +5.15% growth to 25.5.

Market Losers

As for the losing shares, Olympia was the top loser lowering its price by -8% to 2.30, Flame Tree declining by -7% to 4.65 and Unga declining by a further -6.09% to 27.00 following yesterdays loss of -4.17 to 28.75.

Summary Market Trading

In summary, between Monday and Tuesday trading, Sasini grew by 14%, Unga lost 11% and BAT lost 9.64% and then gained 9.26%. Trends show a growth in agricultural (tea sector) and a general decline in bank prices.

Foreign Currency Market

In the foreign currency market, The Kenya shilling weakened by 0.06% to trade at 103.45 from Mondays rate of 103.39. The pond also lost by 0.51% to trade at 128.62 from Monday’s 128.11. However, the shilling was stronger against the Euro trading a109.79 from 109.86 rate of Monday (0.07%).

Treasury Bills

The 91 Day Treasury Bill rate was 8.769% while the 364 Day Treasury Bill rate was at 10.925%.
